Many people always ask us how can I improve the security of my home network?  Here are a list of things you can do to improve the security of your home network.

  • Update your software regularly.

  • Remove unnecessary services and software.

  • Adjust factory-default configurations on software and hardware.

  • Run up-to-date antivirus software.

  • Add malware protection.

  • Install a router with a good firewall and don't rely on your ISP's firewall.

  • Regularly back up your data.

  • Mitigate Email Threats.

  • Improve Password Security

  • Enable wireless security. A MUST!

  • Reduce wireless signal strength.

  • Change default SSID.

  • Disable WPS.

  • Upgrade your routers firmware.

  • Change the routers default administrator password.

Here are some explanations on the terms we used.

SSID: sometimes referred to as the "network name," a service set identifier (SSID)

is a unique name that identifies a particular wireless local are network.

WPS: Wi-fi Protected setup (WPS).

Router: Many ISP's such as Comcast or at&T will provide customers with their modem and router.  You can purchase your own router which will contain a firewall better than what they are providing you with. When you use your own router and firewall you can notify your ISP to disable their wireless because your router will contain wireless on it and you will be able to set your own security.

Mitigate Email Threats: Phishing emails continue to be one of the most common initial attack vectors employed by for malware delivery and credential harvesting. It is important that you utilize a mail application that will provide a higher level of protection.

Self Diagnostic Check

Is your Computer system running slow? If your system has an IDE Sata Drive installed I would download DEFRAGGLER on the web and install it on your system. It is Free but you must watch out for the additional software that wants to install on your computer. Do not install it. Run DEFRAGGLER on your main "C" partition. What this software is going to do is clean up the drive and place files in sequential order.

If your Computer has an SSD Drive in it and it is over 2 years old DEFRAGGLER will use the TRIM function to optimize your SSD Drive.

Empty the contents in the temp folder in Windows.

Empty recycle bin.

If you are running Windows 10 you should have a minimum of 8 gig of ram installed on your computer.

I would highly suggest that you install "MalwareBytes".  Your PC can be infected and you don't even know it.

Stop buying computers that have all the free software on it.  IT IS FREE FOR A REASON!

Keep your computer up-to-date with the software update in Windows.

*Please note:   Apply any of these suggestions listed above at your own risk.
